Aimed at everybody that wants to create documents on the NEXTSTEP platform, OpenWrite offers the functionality that is expected in a high-end word processor, and many features found only in desktop publishing applications, such as character kerning, tracking and free-floating text blocks.. OpenWrite can be used to produce anything from simple sales letters up to lengthy formatted reports. President and co-founder of Xanthus, Jesper Lundh said "OpenWrite, together with the new version of our Questor spreadsheet and our new Open Object Embedding standard, now makes it possible to deploy NEXTSTEP as a company-wide productivity solution." OpenWrite supports all the basic word processor features, as well as headers/footers, footnotes, free-floating text blocks, hierarchical styles, fixed and floating images, variables, borders, columns, multi-level undo, NEXTSTEP spell-checking and support for RTF, RTFD and WriteNow files. Microsoft Word and WordPerfect file support is planned. OpenWrite works with the new Open Object Embedding (OOE) standard from Xanthus. OOE is a new compound document standard from Xanthus that allows objects (drawings, graphs, tables, worksheets etc.) in a 'client application' document (like an OpenWrite document) to be edited by the correct 'server application' (drawing program, spreadsheet etc.) in a seamless manner. OpenWrite will also be available in a professional version that supports a number of advanced features such as multi-file books, automatic paragraph numbering, table of contents, index, cross-references, sorting etc. OpenWrite, OpenWrite Professional and OOE will be shown in the Alembic booth at NEXTSTEP Expo and in the Xanthus Suite at the San Francisco Marriott near Moscone Center. Xanthus International, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is a privately owned software development company that specializes in the NEXTSTEP platform. Xanthus was founded in 1990, and shipped its first product, CraftMan, an award-winning multimedia programming tool for NEXTSTEP in 1992. The product line now includes Questor, a spreadsheet; Graphity, a 3D charting program that supports RenderMan; the new OpenWrite word processor, and OpenBase, a flat-file database.
